For anyone starting a weight loss medication, there are a few things to be aware of. First, some people do experience mild side effects when starting this class of medication, such as nausea, diarrhea or vomiting. For a full list of potential side effects, click here.

You can minimize or avoid these issues entirely by doing a few simple things:

  1. Eating more slowly so your body has time to register that you’re full.
  2. Eating smaller meals (and eating more frequently, if necessary).
  3. Avoiding meals that are high in fat, especially for the first few weeks.
  4. Limiting or avoiding alcohol.
  5. Staying hydrated throughout the day, as being dehydrated can worsen nausea.

These side effects usually go away after a few weeks, but if they persist after your fourth or fifth week on the medication, it’s probably a good idea to let your physician know.
